Description
An all original 19th century Victorian cream-on-cream hand embroidered silk wedding shawl or wrap. There are hand embroidered images of 3 cranes flying over peonies and other flowers, leaves and seed pods, and of butterflies, including 2 butterflies together. This is probably a canton import shawl from the 19th century, which were very popular with Victorians when the orient opened up to the west.  In oriental symbolism the crane flying symbolizes beauty and happiness,  the crane with peonies symbolizes prosperity and longevity, butterflies symbolize immortality, conjugal bliss and long life, and two butterflies together (which are seen on this shawl) symbolizes love.  There is also a ribbon tied in a knot underneath the central motif which also symbolizes a wedding.  No doubt there is even more symbolism in the beautiful hand-embroidered leaves and flowers on this shawl, but the obvious symbolism suggests that it was originally created as a Victorian wedding shawl. The shawl is made of fine tissue silk with silk hand embroidery and a wide band of hand knotted silk fringe on 3 sides.  The size of this large silk shawl is 36" x 103", including the fringe.   The hand-knotted fringe on 3 sides is 8" wide.  There are no major condition issues with this antique shawl (no holes, no tears, no repairs and no missing fringe sections that I could find), but this is a hand embroidered antique tissue silk textile that is at least 125 years old and so there may be some minor signs of age related wear.  The silk is strong ,soft, and supple but was delicate when it was made and is still very delicate.  The embroidery is lovely, and there are very few loose threads.  I did notice one small (about the size of a dime) very pale yellow mark which can be seen on the photos of the shawl at about 7 o'clock below the middle crane in the floral material - it is not really noticeable unless you are looking for it.  I could not find any other stains.  An elegant and wearable, beautifully hand-embroidered cream silk shawl - the perfect wedding accessory or an elegant accessory for any formal dress, and as relevant today as when it was made.  Perfect to accessorize a Victorian themed wedding or evening gown, and what a great gift for an anniversary!  This shawl would also be a great accessory for a fabulous 1920s dress to celebrate the new roaring 20s, as canton import wraps with fringe were all the rage in the 1920s.  Although there is a great deal of symbolism in this textile, the hand embroidery is beautiful in its own right and would accessorize any fine evening gown with elegance.  This is NOT a reproduction, this is an all original 19th century Victorian hand embroidered cream silk shawl with hand knotted fringe.  Scroll down to see more pictures which form part of the description.

Important information on vintage sizing
The sizing of vintage clothing can be very different from modern sizes. An item of clothing manufactured 100 years ago was for body shapes different from our own. Although we quote to the nearest
aproximate
equivalent US size,  we recommend that you review all the detailed measurements provided closely.  If you are not sure if a good fit, please ask us before you purchase.
Please be aware that vintage clothing is neither new nor perfect.  In many cases,vintage clothing has been worn and is no longer new, and that is why it is such a good bargain.  Excellent antique or vintage condition rarely means new - do not expect new or perfect as there will almost always be some signs of wear, especially with older items.  Sometimes we sell newer vintage items that are new old stock (NOS) so they have never been worn and can be in such excellent condition that there are no signs of wear.  But some of the garments we sell are 75 years old or more, and even if they were never worn, the fabric may show signs of wear just from being stored all those years. Please assume that older vintage and antique items may have a little dust and/or a few age spots, unless we have specifically stated that we have recently laundered the item.  Nevertheless, vintage is a great way to dress extravagantly without having an extravagant budget. You can often find extraordinary examples of antique, vintage or designer items that are wearable textile art and will make you look like a million bucks!
